Preparing for Inclusive
Teaching

About the Program

Preparing for Inclusive Teaching is a one-day professional development opportunity offered before the start of the Fall Quarter to support early-career graduate student TAs in STEM and Social Science fields to strengthen their inclusive teaching practices and to build a cross-departmental graduate student teaching community. This program was originally part of the Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI) SEMILLA grant, and so brings particular attention to the importance of inclusive teaching in lower-division Physical & Biological Sciences, School of Engineering, and Social Sciences “gateway” courses.

During this program, graduate students participate in interactive workshops designed to help them feel prepared to lead welcoming, equitable learning experiences.

Topics include:

  • Developing learning outcomes and formative assessments with equity in mind;
  • promoting student motivation and sense of belonging from the first day onward;
  • strengthening learning-supportive mindsets and feedback on student work;
  • utilizing active learning techniques that promote students’ problem-solving skills;
  • and more!

Participants in Preparing for Inclusive Teaching enjoy:

  • meeting and forming community with fellow early-career graduate students in related fields;
  • connecting with faculty and advanced graduate students in related fields during a catered lunch and discipline-specific breakout sessions;
  • learning more about teaching in their fields at UCSC, getting to know their future students, and developing strategies for creating effective and inclusive TA-led sections; and
  • accessing community and support from staff at the Teaching & Learning Center (TLC), Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI) Initiatives, and Academic Excellence Program (ACE).

Participating graduate students receive a professional development certificate indicating their successful completion of this one-day professional development intensive.
